In 1959, the name was changed to Stadsacademie voor Toegepaste Kunsten (city academy of applied arts), keeping the focus firmly on industrial art. Locally, the fine arts became the exclusive preserve of the Jan van Eyck Academie, whose special status meant it was not chosen for ‘applied AND fine arts.’ Although Jef Scheffers was involved in setting up the Jan van Eyck Academie in 1948, he observed that it had cast off its Catholic cloak. He was also despondent about the new developments in the 1950s and 60s, witnessing several former students switch to the Jan van Eyck and go on to join in protests against ‘the local establishment.’
